Ok I knew about juice vs punch..but did you know about chocolate milk vs chocolate beverage?
Both containers look similar...but there are NO benefits (calcium and nutrients of milk) in the chocolate beverage. (the one on the left is the fake)
Ice cream is the same....ice cream vs frozen dessert! (Parlour below is the fake)
If it doesn't have milk or cream in the product they can't advertise it with those words....

Kung Hay Fat Choy!
Hello Families! Happy Chinese New Year. May you have good luck and prosperity! (ask us what that means). We have had a fun week, full of celebrations. We have learned about the history, legend and skill of playing tanagram games. Did you know that if you solve the tanagram box you could have been the next Emperor of China? Playing with tanagrams helps improve visual spacial awareness, problem solving skills and promotes creativity! Keep it on your kitchen table for a little while! Remember the three rules. You must use all 7 pieces, they can NOT overlap, and they must touch each other. ENJOY a little play with purpose.
We discussed Chinese New Year today using a venn diagram, reviewing what is the same and different about how we celebrate New Year in North America. We discovered that our Grade 2's are born in the year of the pig and our Grade 3's are born in the year of the dog. I'm a Monkey, what year were you born in? We have sent home a copy for you to find out! During math we played a few Chinese games. Throwing fists (don't worry it's not what you think), Catching 7 (much like jacks) and chop stick money grab (I made that one up.... it's just fun to play with chopsticks and count up money!) lol There are a few more traditional games that we will try when time permits. We also discussed 3 D shapes, vertices, edges and faces.

Mardi Gras Symmetry Art!
Hope you all enjoyed a lovely (brrrr) family weekend.
We had a very busy day back.
We celebrated Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday) today by enjoying a waffle with syrup and making Mardi Gras Masks. (Pictures tomorrow sorry, I left the mini disc reader at school). We were so busy working today that we missed completing agendas. It would have said. "Ask me about Mardi Gras history and colours." (Purple, green, gold).
This week we will continue to finish up our super hero graphic novels and practice telling time (quarter after and quarter to) grade 2 and elapsed time (hours, weeks, months later) (grade 3).
In art we worked on several Chinese New Year art pieces. (Cherry Blossoms, Snakes, Year of the Goat 2015 using 3D scrunch, crayon resist and warm and cool colour techniques).
We will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes (sides, vertices, nets and problem solving strategies.) The Tanagram is an ancient Chinese puzzle. We will create our own and bring it home this week. Report Cards this week and first term work coming home as well. Whew..what a busy week ahead.
Remember parents that if you have any questions feel free to email me at [email protected]. I am one of those teachers who jumps into my day and works 100% with the students, rarely finding the time to look at my emails during the day. However, I will reply as soon as I do find the time in the day to read your email or at night once my teacher split shift starts again at 8pm (my kids are in bed). Continue to call Mrs. Lee if it is important information to pass along during the day. She loves calling or coming to visit us with news!
Another SUPER day in grade 2/3!
Check out our MART..in the Math tab above!
Celebrating Baxter talent with our own personal author visit!
Max has been creating comics since his primary years! Fantastic story lines, engaging interactive talk, creative kid friendly action and Max left us with many insights and tips for our class as we write our own SUPERHERO stories!
Hey who's that villain zapping us with his lazer!
SUPER HERO day on FRIDAY
Spirit day. Dress as your favourite super hero or as a unique super hero!
Hydro One safety talk today
We discussed safety in the community, hydro lines, hydro stations, safety in the home, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom! Ask your student what they remember about the presentation. (Other that the cool buzz and lights of the presentation board!) lol
THANK YOU!
Thank You to all our visiting readers. We enjoyed your visits and stories! We have a few visitors that had to reschedule and so we hope to welcome them to our classroom this week.
Hydro will be visiting on Tuesday to review safety with the students. I have heard on the wind that Super Hero Spirit Day is Friday. I will confirm on Monday. |

Ok so it's been a busy month already!
Next week we will have visitors coming into our Classroom to read for Literacy/Numeracy Week. Please consider joining us for the Literacy/Math night. There will be rooms set up for the students to explore math and literacy but best of all there will be mini sessions provided for you to learn more about the curriculum expectations and changes and see some of the Apps we are using to enhance student learning.
January 2015
I am not quite sure why my original 'home' page would no longer load. I have tried everything besides purchasing a premium web site. And so after some "4 square" problem solving this is my final solution to the perplexing situation......add another home page to blog on!. Welcome back to the page. I will post pictures and link videos once again. Enjoy.
